Tips To Being A Freelance Travel Writer

By Sarah Hughes

For those who love to write and for those who love traveling to various places around the globe, there is a great opportunity to take. These days, there is a high demand for travel writers because of the presence of many blogs and websites that delve into this subject matter. If one wants to take this road to become a freelance travel writer, then here are a few tips to help.

If one wants to excel in this field, then the first thing that he has to do is improve on his writing. This will definitely entail some experience which he can gain by getting into a writing job from a magazine or ad agency. From there, he can not only build up his skills but also his credibility as a writer.

From here, there are two paths to go into wherein he can offer his services to clients as a freelancer. With this, he may agree with the client that his trips will be subsidised. The other option is for him to go independent and make a travel blog or website of his own and subsidise his own travel.

If one decides on the second choice, then he must find a way to get money for his own travels. One of the most widely done options is to get a loan or to get an investor who wants to venture into this sort of opportunity. The not so popular choice of course, is to save money and start out small.

Now, the next thing that he has to do is to visit places. For this, he will need to decide on the traveling niche that he wants to take like he may choose to write about cultures, food, scenery, tourist attractions etc. Selecting a niche ensures that he will have a specialty so that if he wants clients or if he wants to go independent, his target market will benchmark his specialty already.

Now at this point, one may be thinking it might be easy to get into this field because it is easy to just Google places and write about them. While this does hold true, it can only take one so far in this type of field. If one would really want to go serious in this field, then he has to really visit different places otherwise readers will eventually find out and he can lose credibility.

When he gets back from his travels, then he must already get started to work on his material. If he is a freelancer for clients, then he does not need to worry too much about marketing and promotion since the client will do all of that. If one has his own website though, then he has to do his own marketing.

So if one wants to get into this field, then these are some of the things that he has to do. Of course, one must always remember that traveling is indeed very tiring and takes a toll on the body. But if one enjoys doing it and is healthy enough to go traveling, then it will not be such a problem.
