Tips On Surviving A Power Outage In Your Neighborhood

By Jennifer Allen

In the event that the electricity in your neighborhood goes out, you must keep calm and refrain from panicking because this will not help your situation. Such occurrences are rather common, so you should not make a big deal out of the whole thing. When you need a guide on what to do during a power outage, then read the tips listed below for more information on the matter.

Be aware that outages happen for a reason and that they are almost always announced ahead of time. Whether it may be regular service maintenance or the threat of an upcoming weather disaster, you have to stay abreast of such news when surviving the grid going down. This knowledge will help you prepare in advance for when all of your utility services go out.

Stock up on alternative sources of illumination because you will need them, especially if the outage occurs during nighttime. Candles and lanterns are acceptable, but you need to be careful when using them due to being potential fire hazards. Other good light sources include flashlights and portable emergency floodlights. For the latter option, make sure to have some batteries on hand for them.

Head on over to your kitchen and take out any remaining perishable goods stored inside the refrigerator when the power is out to avoid any spoilage. Cook the food into simple meals you can consume for the rest of the day. Make sure that there should be no leftovers remaining since you obviously cannot store cooked food back into a fridge that is not running on any electricity.

Parallel to the previous tip, you would be wise to stock up on food products that can be stored in your kitchen cupboards or the pantry. Obviously, these include canned goods of all shapes and sizes, as well as things like oatmeal, dried pasta, and bottled water. Majority of these items can be easily consumed with minimal preparation and even without the use of your electric stove.

If you own an electric stove rather than a gas model, then it is essential for you to find backup heating sources to cook food and boil water. You might want to consider investing in a portable camping stove for such contingencies since this is great for temporary short term use. Alternatively, you could use your outdoor barbecue grill as a makeshift stove to cook your meals.

When an outage is announced in your local news on TV or radio, you should immediately make sure to charge your cellphone. Everyone knows you need this communication device to contact your friends and family to let them know you are safe while the power cutoff is happening. Do not waste your battery by using your mobile phone for unnecessary things like taking selfies and the like.

Finally, the lack of power means that you have a legitimate excuse to go out and do things that will entertain you. Fortunately, public places like malls always have backup power provided by generators so you can visit them and treat yourself to a movie or simply browse around and just enjoying the free air conditioning. This is a better alternative than simply staying at home and getting bored.

So as you can see, there really is no reason for you to go into hysterics when the electricity disappears. By following the advice mentioned in this guide, you will surely survive the awkwardness of not having any electric power. Stay positive and remember that this is only a transient period.
